In An Absolut World

The ad shown here was a controversial ad that was used to promote Absolut Vodka in Mexico around March 2008. This ad shows Mexico regaining and maintaining its original land from the United States. Even though this ad was not meant to target the US population, many Americans were infuriated by it they were demanding for the removal of it. Absolut Vodka released an apology to the United States specifically stating that this ad was not meant for their demographic. I have seen this ad before in my Spanish class of Spring 08. When I look at this ad, I am not offended though. I see it as a company trying to sell its product to many different nations by using propaganda that is appealing to certain types of demographics. As clearly shown, this was for the Mexican population. I do understand why Americans are upset with this as, but I don't believe it was a call for an uproar against it. What do you believe or what emotions does this ad instill in you? This ad was found on http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/laplaza/2008/04/mexico-reconque.html.

  1. Personally, I think the ad is great. Anyone who has studied the history surrounding the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo from a Mexican perspective knows that the U.S. paid Mexico far less for the land than what it was worth simply because they had won the war. For Americans to feel offended by this ad is ridiculous because most Americans are immigrants living on American Indian land that was taken in a very shameful way-- Americans shouldn't feel that this land is rightfully theirs because of the history of how it was stolen and otherwise forcefully taken away from the country's original inhabitants with no regard for their entitlement to this land.
